Construction on Cincinnati’s Carew Tower began in 1929, shortly before the October market crash that began the Great Depression. The Art Deco building was the beginning of a series of large construction projects that helped the city weather the worst of the depression. Many of those projects, because of the timeline, were art deco as well.
Art deco is a favorite of mine. I love the combination of art, technology, and optimism that it conveys, the geometric lines, and humanistic motifs. I especially love these buildings in Cincinnati, the way the light falls on the structures. The streaks created by the blurred cloud motion accentuate the design and seem to capture the art deco spirit.
I took up photography during a family trip to Colorado. I had purchased a camera for the family to use on trips and I had an afternoon to kill, so I grabbed the camera and discovered a new passion. At first, I focused on nature and cityscape photography, though lately, I've settled on urban architecture. I like the lines and forms of the city, and exploring my hometown of Cincinnati is always an adventure.
